On what basis should our government commit to using military force? Are there morally justifiable reasons to go to war? Or is all violent conflict indefensible and counterproductive? Perhaps morality does not even have a proper place in questions of war and foreign policy. Many would say that deliberation on such matters should be directly tied to national interest.
With current military engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan, simmering disputes with Iran and a plethora of humanitarian and genocidal crises around the world, issues of war and peace and global stability are of urgent concern for all people. Our speakers will debate these questions and present a wide range of perspectives and philosophies.
The Spark! Speaker Series continues with programs presenting provocative themes and controversial social issues in a civil and respectful forum. Previous topics have included immigration policy, separation of church and state and the use of torture.
