A student town hall discussion at the University of Minnesota with U.S. Representative Michele Bachmann (MN) and Dr. Ron Paul (TX) at Northrop Auditorium - Friday, September 25, 2009.

“The country has seen a rise in civic discourse this August,” said Jeff Frazee, Executive Director of Young Americans for Liberty (YAL). “Americans from across the political spectrum have spoken out against President Obama’s healthcare proposal, bailout mania, and the rapid rise of government control and spending in our economy, and this is the student body’s opportunity to join the discussion.”

The event was hosted by Young Americans for Liberty and sponsored by the Minnesota Campaign for Liberty, Republican Party of Minnesota, Minneapolis City Republican Committee, College Republicans, CFACT, and Students for a Conservative Voice.

What the heck is she doing here? Ron Paul is a well-informed, reasonable individual who knows what he's talking about. Bachmann is an inconsistent, irritating blow-hard who knows nothing outside the standard republican talking points.

This is about as weird as having that neocon-cheerleader Tucker Carlson, of all people, host the Rally for the Republic last year! I couldn't believe it. Had nobody ever seen this guy on TV? Carlson is a buffoon! Personally, I suspect the only reason he tagged along with the liberty movement is that nobody else would have him.

It hurts Ron Paul's credibility (and that of all who support him) when he associates with these knuckleheads.

Bachmann may happen to agree with Ron Paul on certain economic issues at this very moment, while it's convenient, and while right-wing rage and hysteria over a Democrat in the White House are in full force. But remember that these are the same people who proudly stood behind President Bush while he was wiping his butt with the Constitution. These are the same people who told us we had to shut up and support our president, or we were being unamerican.

Frankly, I think it pollutes the movement to have people like them on board. They will be the first to toss our liberties out the window the next time a neocon gets elected.

I understand you suspicion towards these ex-neocons - I share the same sentiments. Though, I am one that didn't always have a set political compass but have righted my ship, if you will. I try to convert progressives and neo-cons to my ideas on liberty and individualism whenever I can. If we isolate ourselves from everyone who isn't as dogmatic as us then the freedom movement will never go anywhere. Maybe you're ok with that but I'm not.

There isn't a single person like Ron Paul in the House or Senate - that we know. Are we to be outraged when he works with people like Barney Frank on a bill to decriminalize possesion of marijuana and industrial hemp?

great comment.

I see you practice the politics of personal destruction. You attempt to trash Ms. Bachmann, but then don't offer a single specific example of what your problem is with her. Nice try. Why don't you sit down, shut up, and listen to her, instead of making a fool of yourself by running your mouth?

's picture

Like a lot of us, Michele Bachmann is on a philisophical journey. Ron Paul is good for her and other open-minded people. Let's see where she ends up before we throw her out with the neo-cons.

If you want to change the system, you can't do it alone.

It's much better than everyone still ingoring the Federal Reserve and similar issues.  By the time neo-conserveratives wear off on this new traditional-conservative streak, they will be replaced by true patriots that believe in the Constitution.   At least Michele is willing to speak on this, even if she isn't pure at heart like Ron.

I sure hope you're taking the proper precautions, or at the very least have a "Plan B" and "Plan C" in place. The hordes of intolerant, politically correct Marxist and neocon thugs that populate university campuses are probably going to do everything they can to shut this thing down. If I were you, I'd have loads of security and not a few fully-charged audiovisual camcorders on hand - and not just to tape the content of the presentations, if you know what I mean. :)

Your truthomatic from the left-leaning St. Petersburg Times must be incorrect when they say ACORN was to have nothing to do with the actual census...since the Census Bureau took the time this week to tell the world that they were cutting off ALL ties with ACORN.  A truthomatic with an ideological lean is worse than useless...it annoys people when they figure out that they are being duped...I feel duped and annoyed!

's picture

She is a intellectual sore to the Republican Party, I'm ashamed of YAL for associating themselves with this wingnut.

Ron Paul is a scholar and a gentleman, he doesn't belong next to a cultural Republican like her.

's picture

Learn proper english before you open your obviously stupid mouth.

's picture

The liberal extremists hate her to the point of distraction, and the main-stream media don't like her either.  But she's far more intelligent than they have portrayed her in the media, and she supports your liberty a damn sight more than a lot of the self-righteous agents provocateurs hiding in the anonymity of these comment pages.

's picture

On the contrary, we Liberals love Bachmann.  She's exactly the kind of person we can use to rally support from sensible independents.

's picture

Ha. The independants your side is LOSING on a daily basis (everytime Obama opens his crazy, radical mouth)? The reason all of you leftists attack Michelle constantly is the same reason you attack Sarah Palin..... You're very, very threatend and afraid of her.

's picture

In a sense, you are correct.  I'm personally afraid of the consequences of politicians  who whip up fears against government census workers, for example, rather than focusing on the real issues of the day.

As a Liberal, I can at least respect Ron Paul as a gentleman who happens to have different ideas about governing than me, and therein lies the possibility for an honest debate...and even places where we can agree (ex a non-interventionist foreign policy).

People like Bachmann (and Sarah Palin) are different, they simply prey on peoples' fears to further a rigidly reactionary agenda, and that is always a little scary.

's picture

Do you have any concrete facts?  I'm not whipping up public sentiment, I just want people to know that in almost every case where the government leads, the prices rise.  Any subsidy increases costs.  Rent controls, price controls, any legislated price fixing raises the cost, lowers the quality and if it is always the government that pays the difference, the price rises - read this as I'm required to pay higher taxes.

As I said, I was referring to "politicians who whip up fears," politicians like Michelle Bachmann, not you. Unless you're Michelle Bachmann ;).

Like I said, Ron Paul seems like a decent enough guy, even though I disagree with most of his political positions.  Bachmann, on the other hand, takes a predictably reactionary line on just about everything (war, religion, homosexuality, prayer in schools, etc) - she's an ideologue who will seemingly say anything to further her own agenda (calling President Obama and congress un-American http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_pN2IPAw6E, ).  It's not enough to disagree, no, she has to portray people she sees as political enemies as being un-American.  That sort of politics eats at the soul of our democracy.  I just don't see Paul as being in the same camp.  I also happen to think Bachmann is one of those conservatives who's against big government until she wants to wield it's power to enforce her own social values.

We've already now seen one case of horrible act of political violence in the hanging of the census worker, who was striped and labeled "fed" before-hand.  Sadly, tacit and explicit threats of violence happen on a regular basis these days (ex protesters showing up at political rallies fully armed), and people are rightly scared of the irrational tone of the current atmosphere (http://unreasonablefaith.com/2009/09/22/7166/).

's picture

I'm not hiding, my name is Chris Bowen, and I'd be willing to tell Rep. Bauchmann to her face that I don't see eye to eye with her on a plethora of social and economic issues!

I worked as a volunteer for the Ron Paul campaign, and I'm still active in politics, this woman does NOT belong at a LIBERTY event!

If you disagree, my e-mail is Christopher_Bowen@marymount.edu

's picture

Haha learn to read.

's picture

This is very cool! Does anyone know if this is open to more than just U of M students?

's picture

I am hoping this is open to the public.  Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I am a hug Paul fan and plan to attend if it is an open event.

Thanks

's picture

It is open to the public, yes.

's picture

I'd also like to know if it's open to the public.

BTW, YAL, you mispelled Michele's name in the graphic.

's picture

Answer is simple.  First step; READ above--

This event is free and open to the public.
