We're not saying what it was supposed to be. We're saying what it is. It's an empire. You can call it a republic all day long, but when you're waging multiple foreign wars, have soldiers in over 140 countries, and have economic dominion in half the world, you're an empire. I'd say it's pretty "ignorant" to keep referring to it as a republic when it has long since ceased to be anything of the sort.
