"How can a government step in and force you to have health insurance?"
Probably the same way it forces you to have car insurance. The State rants to no end about soaring health care costs,yet they fail to realize regulations such as this are the reason health care is so expensive. The State doesn't understand basic supply v. demand economics. If there is less demand for health insurance the price will go down, thus the people who desire that time of coverage will more easily afford it.
