...that was the line of the preamble of the Constitution I must have forgotten when I first read about a law in Pennsylvania which requires home kitchens to be inspected by the state if they produce anything for a bake sale:

Bill Chirdon, director of food safety for the state Department of Agriculture, said hundreds of people across Pennsylvania bake from home and sell those goods to the public. All it takes is an inspection.

Calvin Coolidge had some good one liners: "We have enough laws already, I don't need to sign any more" (when asked why his summer vacation lasted the entire summer) but he also had some more substantial thoughts about the role of the federal government:

I favor the policy of economy not because I wish to save money, but because I wish to save people. The men and women of this country who toil are the ones who bear the cost of the government. Every dollar we carelessly waste means that their life will be so much the more meager.
