My name is Tristan Montgomery, and I am the new Chapter President for YAL at Indiana University. Yesterday, we had the Student Involvement Fair here on campus. My state representative gave me several useful tips on how to recruit effectively. For example, instead of sitting behind the table, I stood in front and gathered signups. I reached out to students and attempted to start conversations with them.
Unfortunately, the student fair staff decided to put YAL right next to the Libertarian Party at Indiana University, so we had to agree to utilize different tactics. They were using the political quiz, so I had to improvise. I decided to use the "What to say to police" cards to start conversations with people about government overreach. Despite the complications and the unfortunate positioning, we still managed to get 10 new signups. Part of this was because I worked with both the Libertarian Party at IU and a brand new club here: Liberty in North Korea. We sent people each other's way, and we didn't make it a competition. I also went out of my way to reach out to people, which really helped get people interested in YAL. I think this is a great start for the rebirth of the IU chapter, and I'm excited to get started.
