July 4th Social Media Push

Like

UPDATE: We just hit 15,000 likes on Facebook! Thanks everyone! Less than 500 followers to go to reach our goal on Twitter, follow us here: @YALiberty

As social networking intern for YAL, I've witnessed our Facebook and Twitter pages grow substantially over the last several months.  I've always believed in the power of social media, but I've been amazed at how many more people YAL is reaching by being active on the web.

We are approaching two important milestones in this regard: 15,000 likes on Facebook and 5,000 followers on Twitter.  We've set a goal for ourselves to reach these numbers by July 4th.  Will you help us?

Here are a few things you can do:

- Post our Facebook page on your wall, encouraging your friends to like us: http://facebook.com/yaliberty

- Do the same for our Twitter page: http://twitter.com/yaliberty

- If you're on Twitter, tweet this message: "Help @YALiberty get to 5k followers by the 4th! Follow them and then RT! #yal #c4l #tlot #tcot"

- Retweet this message: http://twitter.com/#!/YALiberty/status/86460384705396737

(As an added bonus, we will follow back anyone who follows us between now and the 4th)

Thanks everyone, and Happy 4th!

The Dollar Coin: Supply without Demand

image In 2005, Congress, acting upon the success of the 50 state quarters program, decided to take specialized currency one step further with the authorization of the Presidential $1 coin.

The idea would be to release four dollar coins a year for roughly ten years, which each one depicting a president. It was meant to be both a new, more practical type of coin as well as an "educational" tool. In reality, the only education that this coin brought with it was that dollar coins are nothing more than a waste of time and taxpayer dollars, and now their only purpose is to take up real estate in a Baltimore bank vault:  It has been discovered that in a large vault, there are nearly 1 billion dollar coins that have not been circulated, roughly 40% of all the dollar coins the federal government has made since 2005.

Although intended to be worth a dollar, the government spends 30 cents each coin. Therefore, $300 million worth of time and effort went into making coins that will not see the light of day. Even worse, the government is obligated to mint these coins by act of law until the series has run its course, possibly 2016 or later, and the vault of coins could swell to nearly 2 billion uncirculated coins, costing taxpayers $600 million. It’s Not Our Job to Greece the Wheels

Q. What is your views on Greece given all the hubub? Would it be better for them to fail and hopefully rise from the ashes, all the while keeping the Euro and staying a full member of the EU or would it be better to at least reinstate the Drachma and break off from the Eurozone…? — nowahklrk, from tumblr.

A. Pardon the title pun — it’s just way too obvious to pass up.

I haven’t closely followed the situation in Greece, though I know it’s been growing steadily worse for quite a while now.  Like most Americans, I am unfortunately ignorant of the politics of most other countries (but hey, at least I’m aware of it, right?  And I hope to remedy that sooner than later).  It’s not that I don’t care; it’s just that reading, writing, and working in American politics kind of takes all the capacity for politics which I have at this point.

That said, my main thought on the subject is that the citizens of other countries in general, but especially America (I mean, we’re not even in Europe — geez), should not be forced to pay for the Greek government’s failure and apparently rampant corruption.  That’s just not our job.  Daniel Mitchell at Cato makes this argument better than I can:

It appears that American taxpayers are about to subsidize another Greek bailout (via the Keystone Cops at the IMF). This is way beyond economically foolish. It is also morally offensive.

To turn Winston Churchill’s famous quote upside down, “Never have so many paid so much to subsidize such an undeserving few.” Let’s start with a few facts:

  • Greece’s GDP is roughly equal to the GDP of Maryland.
  • Greece’s population is roughly equal to the population of Ohio.
  • Despite that small size, in both terms of population and economic output, Greece already has received a bailout of about $150 billion (actual amount fluctuates with the exchange rate).

Why I Oppose the DREAM Act

The DREAM Act is back in the news today as some have accused the Obama Administration of not executing current immigration policy in favor of the still-pending DREAM Act. For those unfamiliar, the DREAM Act is a proposal that would give illegal immigrants, who came to the United States as children, a chance at legal status if they complete two years of college or military service.

While I am all for providing a path to citizenship and ultimately open border style immigration laws, I do not support this proposal and it is my belief that all liberty-minded people should oppose it as well.

If we look past the question of whether or not illegal immigrants should have a path to citizenship, we can see that this proposal is simply another attempt at government led social engineering. Why make the requirement two years of college or military service? Because it is government's belief that attending college or joining the military molds "better" citizens.

Anonymous Goes after Orlando

imageEarlier this month, we reported the story of the Orlando-based organization Food Not Bombs being forced to cease feeding homeless people on city land after some of its members were arrested for violating a city ordinance regarding large gatherings in public parks. As that case makes its way through the court system, the renegade samaritans are now receiving help from an unlikely source: computer hackers who made Orlando their next target.

This week, it has been reported that the mysterious computer hacking troop Anonymous is coming to the aid of the beleaguered group through a web campaign called "Operation Orlando". The purpose of this mission is to attack "city web assets" as well as Orlando tourism sites on the internet in revenge for the arrests. Also, the group is promoting a boycott of the city of Orlando until the city repents on its treatment of the organization. Calling Orlando city officials "human rights abusers," as well as deeming the arrest for Food Not Bombs president Keith McHenry a "declaration of war," the attacks will be aimed at disrupting city communications and Internet accounts in an effort to get the men released and let them go on serving free lunches to needy residents. Yesterday they launched their first attack of their "war" by disabling the website orlandofloridaguide.com for much of the day, and will be continuing their hack attacks until the men are released.  More at www.silverunderground.com.

Warrantless GPS Tracking On Trial

image Despite the unfortunate reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act by Congress last month, provisions of the law, especially with regards to warrantless searches, are being challenged in the courts. This week, the Supreme Court is going to weigh in on the constitutionality of bugging somebody's car with a GPS tracking device without a proper search warrant, which some believe is a flagrant violation of the 4th Amendment.

The case in question revolves around Antoine Jones, who was convicted in 2008 for possession and distribution of cocaine. Mr. Jones' argument is that the evidence presented in his trial was illegally gotten from a GPS tracking device secretly mounted on his Jeep for a month leading up to his arrest. Therefore, the evidence cannot be considered admissible because it was acquired without a search warrant being filed.

Last year, the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled in Mr. Jones' favor, stating that the tracking is a violation of the 4th amendment, yet the government maintains that the warrantless GPS tracking is in compliance with previous court rulings regarding searches. As the case goes before the Supreme Court, civil rights groups like the ACLU and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) have filed amicus briefs, claiming the new modern tracking style is "highly intrusive" and needs to be restrained.  More at www.silverunderground.com.

Miss USA to TSA: Ban the Scan!

imageAs people across the country prepare for their summer vacations, some will be taking vacations that involve flying, which means having to deal with the pat-down happy TSA. The obscene practices of this government entity are well-known and much-despised, and those of us that would like nothing better than to see such practices end may've gotten a new partner in the fight.

Teaming up with Campaign for Liberty, Miss USA 2003 winner Susie Castillo is launching a campaign to get state and local governments to pass anti-groping and anti-pat down legislation similar to that of the Texas State Legislature. Ms. Castillo's anger at the TSA comes from her own experiences being "violated" by a TSA servicewoman at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport back in April. On her website, she describes the ordeal, which involved frequent and unnecessary touching of her body that was different from her previous pat-down experience at LAX in Los Angeles, which was less thorough. Ron Paul & Barney Frank Introduce Pot Legalization Bill to House

image

Are the days of smoking pot in fear of arrest coming to an end? After a report by the Global Commission on Drug Policy stated that the international War on Drugs has failed, Representatives Barney Frank (D-MA) and Ron Paul (R-TX) have sponsored a bill that would end the federal prohibition on marijuana, and leave the decision of legalization to the states.

The bill would also reduce Washington's role in the War on Drugs to combatting organized crime and illegal smuggling, rather than individual possession offenses. Rep. Frank supports marijuana laws moving to the states, stating that "prosecuting responsible adults who make the decision ...to smoke marijuana interferes with their personal freedom," and likened this proposed piece of legislation to the 21st Amendment that repealed federal alcohol prohibition. However, due to the large number of pot prohibitionists in Congress, Rep. Frank admitted that the bill has "no chance of passing" but introducing the piece will help the "educational process" of marijuana laws within government, and lead to change down the road.
