Dr. Justin Ross Speaks To YAL @ IU

Last night YAL @ IU had a special guest: Dr. Justin Ross from IU's School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Justin Ross is the only classically liberal economist in all of Indiana University-Bloomington and is an extremely eloquent speaker. He explained why libertarianism does not fall on the conservative-progressive spectrum, and also touched on a lot of "grey area" within libertarian philosophy.

UW-Madison Constitution Day

YAL UW-Madison had a successful Constitution Day earlier this month.  The group passed out over 100 Constitutions and collected nearly 500 signatures of students who wanted to see Ron Paul come to Madison.  We tabled on Library Mall, a hot spot on campus that incidentally President Obama spoke at this past Tuesday, and engaged in friendly conversation with people about our long-neglected founding document.

While members were talking to students about the Constitution in the streets, we used our "Liberty Megaphone" to yell "Happy Constitution Day" and injected humor to make people smile and take a look at our group.  One of our funnier megaphone lines was "Thomas Jefferson was a terrorist because he questioned his government.  You'll be a terrorist too if you question yours."  Another one was "The 13 trillion dollar national debt is nothing to worry about.  The government has it all under control.  Please return to your television sets immediately."  We like this unconventional approach of spreading the liberty message because it is a happy, humorous way of communicating and it opens people up.

Quinnipiac Student Arrested for Filming Police

While Anthony Graber was recently cleared of all charges after filming a police officer who pulled out a gun during a routine traffic stop, it doesn't appear as though the debate over filming police is over yet. A fellow libertarian at Quinnipiac was recently arrested while trying to film a police encounter in New Haven.

Here's an excerpt from my story for the Quinnipiac Chronicle (what is the internet for, if not shameless self-promotion?):

While there are no laws on the books in Connecticut that make filming a police officer illegal, Quinnipiac senior Kenneth Hartford found out on Saturday night that it isn’t quite so simple.

According to multiple witnesses, within minutes of Hartford beginning to film a Quinnipiac student being arrested outside of Toad’s Place in New Haven, an officer tackled and handcuffed him. Hartford was charged with Disorderly Conduct and Interfering with a Police Investigation. He went on to spend the night in jail at 24 Union Avenue.

In a short video that he took on his cell phone before his arrest, officers can be heard swearing at Hartford. The officer who ultimately arrested Hartford said, “Put that in your fucking pocket and get the fuck out of here.”

The full story, as well as Hartford's video, can be found here.

BIG Announcement: YAL's Five-State Plan

YAL's Five-State Plan

34 Days until Election Day!

Young Americans for Liberty is proud to announce our Five-State Campaign Plan to mobilize hundreds of trained activists right now in key battleground states.

After careful analysis and discussion, YAL has identified Kentucky, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Michigan, and Nevada as five states where you and I can make a significant impact.

I am calling on every YAL donor, activist, and member to support this effort TODAY.

You see, this is YAL's most ambitious plan yet. All of our past efforts prepared us for this moment. Now it's time for you and I to act!

Our budget for this five-state plan is $140,700. Fortunately, this week alone, I have raised more than $23,500 for this project, and I am fully committed to raising the remaining $117,200.

I believe you understand what is at stake here, and to be frank with you, there is simply no longer any time to waste.

University of North Texas YAL: After One Month on Campus

The University of North Texas Young Americans for Liberty has had an incredibly successful start to its first semester on campus. At our first recruitment event, UNT-YAL signed up 80+ students and had contact with hundreds more students. At each weekly meeting, we've had 25+ students. But our greatest measurement of success so far was an event hosting former Governor Gary Johnson, attended by over 100 students. Check out our new recruitment video to see all our activities and get ideas for your own chapter!

Republicans repeating history with "Pledge to America"

The year was 1994.  Leading by 5% on Gallup's generic ballot poll, the Republican Party was poised to take control of the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years. In fact, the Democrats had run the House for all but four of the preceding 62 years of U.S. history.

In a truly revolutionary political move, the Republican Party released the Contract with America, which outlined in precise public policy terms exactly what the Republicans would do if they took control of the House. When election day came, the Republicans gained 54 seats and their victory was hailed as "The Republican Revolution."

But did the electoral revolution result in a public policy revolution? Did the dramatic change in the partisan composition of the House bring about a dramatic change in governance? Did House Speaker Newt Gingrich and the rest of his party make good on their promises to bring more transparency, accountability, and fiscal responsibility to Washingon?

Six years later, Ed Crane, the president of the libertarian Cato Institute would lament in Forbes magazine that "the combined budgets of the 95 major programs that the Contract with America promised to eliminate have increased by 13%."
