Democrats Change Their Arguments

Continuing the recent trend of candidates keeping their distance from President Obama and his unfavorable approval ratings, Politico reports that many Democrats are also keeping their distance from his arguments. Instead of arguing that the Health Care Reform bill will lower the deficit, White House allies are turning to promises of changing and "fixing" the already passed legislation.

Sound like a change of heart? No, not really. It's purely a strategic move in light of the 58% disapproval rate for the bill:

"Straightforward ‘policy’ defenses fail to [move] voters’ opinions about the law," says one slide. "Women in particular are concerned that health care law will mean less provider availability — scarcity an issue."

...the fiscal and economic arguments that were the White House's first and most aggressive sales pitch have essentially failed. ...

The presentation advises, instead, sales pitches that play on personal narratives and promises to change the legislation.

"People can be moved from initial skepticism and support for repeal of the law to favorable feelings and resisting repeal," it says. "Use personal stories — coupled with clear, simple descriptions of how the law benefits people at the individual level — to convey critical benefits of reform."

YAL Chapter VP Spreads Awareness about Islam, Peace, and Terrorism

His campus paper reports:

Before 9/11, Jamal Kamandy wasn’t outspoken about his religion.

But after the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon –– along with the conflicts that followed –– he now feels obligated to help others understand and learn about the true, peaceful nature of Islam.

Kamandy, a political science and philosophy double major at CSU, spoke to a crowd of 30 people packed into the basement of the Mugs Coffee Lounge in Old Town on Friday night.

“I don’t want Muslims to be cornered in our society and be held accountable because of the acts of 19 stupid people,” he said. “Physical violence will only continue a vicious cycle of hate. Therefore, Muslims and non-Muslims must engage in peaceful and prosperous dialogue.”

The Fed's Increased Efforts to Hide Bailout Records

On Friday, Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke gave a speech claiming that the economy is finally headed on the right track. He stated at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City’s annual economic symposium that "despite this recent slowing, however, it is reasonable to expect some pickup in growth in 2011 and in subsequent years."

Not so fast. It has become apparent that Ben Bernanke’s economic forecasts are rarely ever correct. Here are just a few quotes showing Ben Bernanke’s oblivion to the looming housing crisis from 2005 to 2007:

CNBC announcer Maria Bartiromo, July 2005: We have so many economists coming on our air and saying oh this is a [housing] bubble and it’s going to burst and this is going to be a real issue for the economy. Some say it could even create a recession at some point. What is the worst case scenario?

Ben Bernanke: I guess I don’t buy your premise. It’s a pretty unlikely possibility… I don’t think it’s going to drive the economy too far from its full employment path though…I’m hopeful and I’m confident in fact that the bank regulators will pay close attention to the kind of loans that are being made and making sure underwriting is done right.

Ron Paul at YOUR campus?

Want to host Ron Paul on your campus?

You do!?  Well, fortunately and unfortunately, so do a lot of other YAL chapters across the country -- and Dr. Paul is a busy man.

Many YAL chapters have big plans for this fall. They're going to bring Ron Paul AND Tom Woods AND Judge Napolitano to campus; they're going to raise a bunch of money and throw a huge event with thousands of people in attendance!  Sound familiar?

Sadly, hosting Dr. Paul on campus is not as simple as it sounds. It is a unique opportunity that requires a comprehensive proposal, lots of time, fundraising, and several hundred petition signatures.

But don't despair!  YAL wants Ron Paul to visit your campus, too, so my staff and I have put together a guide for you to learn how to bring the good doctor to your campus.

Learn how to bring Ron Paul to YOUR campus!

image

If you follow the instructions in this guide, produce a creative and thorough application, and collect petition signatures on your campus; you will have a real opportunity to bring Dr. Paul to your school.  He loves the enthusiasm of young people and enjoys speaking on college campuses more than anywhere else -- but it's up to you to convince him to visit yours.

Please don't hesitate to contact me or the Regional Director or State Chair for your area if you have any questions about this process.  We're here to help you have a productive fall semester...and maybe schedule a visit from THE Ron Paul!

YAL at Whatcom Keeping Busy

Liberty starts at home, and YAL members from Whatcom Community College remained active in Bellingham, WA during the summer break.

The WCC chapter was previously honored with being the first political group ever recognized on their campus. Leading the charge, Johnny Weaver and Justin McKay held an event to protest four new red-light cameras and two school-zone cameras

Arguing that law enforcement should focus on protection of people and property, not making money, YAL at WCC teamed up with the local Campaign for Liberty and made their way to City Hall to make their voices heard.

I love YAL

In between cracking the whip and fighting statism, sometimes you should show your chapter--or co-workers--some love.

What do Tetris and Communism have in common? Everything. Kind of.

I recently stumbled across one of the greatest pieces of creative genius on YouTube that I've ever seen. Ever.

The British Artists Dan Woods and Donald Newholm, "Pig With The Face of a Boy" are collectively known as "the world's best neo-post-post-music hall anti-folk band." And by George, they are.
